Scratching the History

J.C.R. Licklider from ARPA and M.I.T. envisioned a network for computers to talk should the telephone system ever fail.  With the Aid of Packet Switching, this allowed the ARPAnet to be more failproof than those phones.  Computers at UCLA and Stanford were the first to communicate between each other.  By the end of the ‘60s, four computers were connected and it grew quickly from there to London and Norway.  As the node network grew problems arose, but with the works of Cerf and Khan, these hurdles continued to be overcome and eventually a Swedish programmer Berners-Lee expanded the ability to send files back and forth but share information retrievable by anyone who had access.  Many years later, Mosaic made searching for information user friendly.  Mosaic would eventually become known as Netscape.  There are plenty of information that delve deeper into the past of the internet and to the future.

Methods of Communication

Social Site Cubes

Social Networking

Social Networking happened through the exchange of media, text, and ideas through virtual communities such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube.  Often grouped populated by like minded individuals who share interest or keep in touch regardless of the physical distance between them.  They can even be tools for professional needs such as LinkdIn.

Email Art

Email, or electronic mail, is a form of communication similar to written mail of the past.  Except this excludes the mail man.  The mail man is software that delivers typed letters of information back and forth between computers through email address, just like house addresses.  Each email address is unique to the individual user.  This method of delivery is almost instant and allows to duplicate the information to multiple recipients at one time and all over the globe.

Blogs allow for the exchange of conversation and ideas posted by online authors housed often in social networking communities.  The blog often acts like a diary of commentary about thoughts and articles found on other sites by their writers, known as bloggers.  Wikis are websites updated by multiple users that continue to modify and update information as it becomes available.  Acting like breathing documents of collaborative information for the general public about any topic.  Although not reliably accurate, the attempt to be as accurate and informative as possible though using the population of knowledge to share what they know.

Podcasting

Webcasting & Podcasting

Webcasts make use of the streaming idea we previously discussed.  Webcasts are not stored on devices but delivered via the internet and instantly available for access in real time.  Internet connection is required during viewing where a podcast is downloaded over the internet to a device but can be listened or watch offline as it is already in your possession.  One can think of Webcasts as television or radio and Podcasts as cassette tapes or compact disc.

Notice podcasts picture above only needs uploading to the internet once the work is completed, recorded, edited, etc.  Film can even be added to as a later segment.

Webcasting image to the right is equipped for live feed with camera and wireless network to feed directly on air live.

Streaming

Streaming

Streaming, similar to the telephone, is the ability of sending voice and video practically in real time.  Before one had to download media before they could play it back and this could take 5 minutes to several hours. This is downloading versus streaming.  With today's technology in regard to speed and bandwidth, streaming downloads a small portion to play instantly while it will just as quickly delete the small portion in order to make space for the next segment.  There are diverse systems at play to accommodate file types and delivery.  Today, software is plenty that can manipulate local and remote equipment to speed up delivery and even record streams, but remember it is essentially an instant delivery of media without wait times to include recorded and live events.

 E-Commerce

&

M-Commerce

E-Commerce and M-Commerce:  Almost 20 years apart in ability, M-Commerce expands on E-Commerce's ability to sell goods and services via electronic systems like the internet to include cellular data and wireless hand-held devices.  Thus, electronic versus mobile.  Although similarities are vast, it is how they work that gives them their identity from mobility, payments, user interface simplicity, platform of websites versus apps and cost.  While E-commerce is more limited in the way people access information on the go today, it is less costly while App creation needed to M-Commerce can get expensive.
